salle-basse

From the courtyard we enter the central building through a careened arch, in other words one which recalls the submerged part of the hull of a boat. Here we enter the salle basse. This space, intended for official engagements, has its walls decorated with pictures of landscapes depicting scenes of both farming and courtly life. The observer casts their eye over this peaceful, ideal world, as if they were looking upon a faux arcade with crystal, alabaster, and marble columns and leather drapes. The coat of arms of Georges de Challant sits over the fireplace, while on the other short side there is a depiction of the Judgement of Paris. The name of the artist is unknown, but their capacity for invention, lively taste for detail and attention to the precious arts suggest that they come from beyond the Alps, possibly Flanders or France.
