The works to build Gamba Castle in Châtillon began in 1901 and continued for at least two years, managed by the engineer Carlo Saroldi from Turin. The abode had been conceived as a sort of gift of love from Carlo Maurizio Gamba to his wife Angélique Passerin d’Entrèves, who in this way would be able to be near her family, hailing from Châtillon and owners of a castle near the centre of the village. The luxurious residence immediately assumed the features of a grandiose palace made to measure for Angélique, as demonstrated by the presence of a lift, the first in all of the Valley, installed by the baron to lessen the difficulties caused by his wife’s reduced mobility. The original system can still be seen while visiting the museum.
