Stately homes almost always had at least one fireplace: this served to heat the rooms and, in the kitchens, was used during food preparation. The ones in Fénis are extraordinary for both their majesty and decoration. Some appeared in the castle between 1393 and 1395, when Boniface I de Challant carried out the works which turned the austere stronghold into a refined and lively abode. Others were built during the refurbishment works which took place at the castle in the following two centuries. Perhaps the most interesting is the one located in the so-called room of the poëlle, or rather the heated room on the first floor, above the cheminée on the ground floor.
