In the last decades of the 19th century the architect Alfredo d’Andrade entered the castle, which was unfortunately in a state of disrepair; however, he was still able to perceive “the solidity of the walls, the vastness of the spaces and the power of the vaults, the construction of the doors, the windows and the enormous fireplaces”, all made with elegance and skill by capable craftsmen. Indeed, one of the most surprising aspects of the castle is provided by the majestic fireplaces, present in many rooms, which were needed to heat the spaces and prepare meals. There are several in the kitchens on the ground floor, while on the first floor there is one of quite colossal dimensions, with two elaborate columns flanking it. The fireplaces were produced by different craftsmen and labourers working in the castle between the end of the 14th and the 15th century.
