Savoia-Décauville

Among all the mod cons and innovative works installed at the behest of Queen Margherita, the system for transporting food from the kitchen, situated outside the castle, to the dining room, is particularly original. Indeed, Margherita could not bear the smells emanating from the kitchen and asked the Società Nazionale delle Officine di Savigliano to design a small Decauville railway (from the name of the French engineer and industrialist Paul Decauville, who came up with the idea of a light railway system in 1873) capable of taking food underground on rails running through a tunnel connecting the kitchens and the castle.
