Following extensive restoration work, the painted decorations on the walls overlooking the courtyard once again reveal their quality and compositional richness.
Between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Giorgio di Challant sought to celebrate the grandeur of the family by commissioning a composition of coats of arms, conceived as a kind of memorial and an invitation to younger generations to follow the example of their ancestors.
On the wall of the central building, particular attention is drawn to the Savoy coat of arms, the Challant coat of arms with its sumptuous crest – that is, a helmet enriched with striking ornaments – and the coat of arms of Luigi di Challant and Marguerite de La Chambre, adorned with festoons and framed by a laurel wreath supported by mermaids.
In the lower section is a painted scene depicting the struggle between Hercules and the giant Antaeus, reflecting the influence of the innovations of the Italian Renaissance on the patron’s decorative choices.
