Since 2009, when its main façade was freed of the scaffolding which had covered it for 20 years of long and complex restoration works, the Roman Theatre of Aosta has gradually regained its original function: hosting various types of cultural events which are given an extraordinarily powerful setting, both emotional and evocative, by this location. Every year, above all during the summer season, the Theatre comes alive with voices, lights and music, becoming an invaluable place for leisure, entertainment and knowledge, not only recounting its own history and that of the town, but also sharing a wide-ranging, multifaceted kaleidoscope of fashions, styles and the languages of culture and performance.
In winter it transforms, welcoming Aosta’s traditional Christmas market to its thousands-of-years-old walls: a genuine alpine village where châlets, skilfully placed among the ancient architecture, affirm and illustrate the dual soul of this strategic Roman city in the heart of the Alps. Currently at the centre of an important redevelopment project of the eastern part of Roman-era Aosta known as “Aosta Est” (Aosta East), the Theatre and the surrounding archaeological area including the Porta Prætoria and the Balivi Tower will see their narrative power grow to make the long, rich history of the town, as well as its indisputable charm, more relevant than ever in the present day.
